There's so much beautiful symbolism in here!
You have the sisters who are on the paradisiacal side of the bridge, unheeding and unsympathetic to the arduous lives of mortals. You have Monkey and (by all intents and purposes) Kubo who are on the opposite side of the bridge, where they are more familiar with the mortal struggle of every day problems.
And then you have Beetle, drowning in adversity as he struggles to tread through waters of amnesia and curses. Kubo, instead of being callous and unfeeling like his aunts, knows better than to ignore his friend's pleas for help. Raised in an idyllic and impoverished life, he knows what it's like to face adversity, and reached out to Beetle, both literally and metaphorically. And Monkey watches on, proud that this child she raised
